Australia Post has overhauled the address format for its Parcel Locker and Parcel Collect service, streamlining how customers receive deliveries ahead of one of the busiest retail periods of the year. The change, which came into effect on 1 September, affects more than two million Australians currently signed up to the service.

What's changing with the Parcel Locker address format?

Under the old system, customers sending parcels to a post office counter or Parcel Locker were required to enter a full street address alongside a ten-digit Parcel Locker or Parcel Collect number — a format many found cumbersome. The updated format replaces that lengthy number with a simple two-digit ID, followed by a suburb, street and postcode.

To illustrate the difference, an address that previously read Parcel Locker 12345 67890, 42 Wallaby Way, Sydney NSW 2000 would now simply appear as Parcel Locker 10, Sydney NSW 2000.

Australia Post has noted that the old format may still appear in some places for a period of time. MyPost account holders are advised to continue using the address that automatically populates in their account, with parcels continuing to be delivered as normal. Customers simply need to ensure their name matches what is listed in their MyPost profile and follow the on-screen prompts.

Why Australia Post is making the switch

The simplification is being introduced alongside an ongoing and significant expansion of the Parcel Locker network. Australia Post has indicated it plans to grow the network by 60 per cent year-on-year, reflecting a shift in how Australians interact with the postal service.

Collecting parcels has now become the most common reason people visit a post office, driven in large part by the frequency with which home deliveries are missed. The Parcel Locker service provides customers with a flexible alternative, allowing them to collect packages at a time that suits their schedule.

"The investment reflects changing customer expectations, with more Aussies shopping online and seeking delivery options that fit around work, family and busy schedules," Australia Post said.

Retailers already seeing the benefits

Some online retailers have already experienced tangible results from embracing the Parcel Locker system. Fashion label Forever New, which added a Parcel Locker option directly into its online checkout, reported a 12 per cent drop in missed deliveries since the feature was introduced.

The company's Head of Digital & eCommerce said the service has proven particularly popular with millennial shoppers and those living in inner metropolitan areas — demographics that tend to be away from home during standard delivery windows.

What it means heading into the festive season

With online shopping volumes traditionally surging in the lead-up to Christmas, the timing of the address format change is deliberate. A simpler, shorter delivery address reduces the chance of input errors and failed deliveries during an already high-pressure period for postal networks.

For the more than two million Australians already using the Parcel Locker service — and the many more expected to sign up as the network expands — the update is designed to make the process of receiving online orders faster and more straightforward than ever.
