A British taxidermy enthusiast has secured what experts believe is the only surviving Tasmanian tiger head in existence, paying £62,000 (approximately A$119,000) at auction for a specimen that had been catalogued as a stuffed fox with an estimated value of just £30 to £50.
The extraordinary sale has electrified both the collector community and the scientific world, with the specimen potentially offering new clues about one of Australia's most iconic extinct animals — the thylacine, commonly known as the Tasmanian tiger.
From £30 fox to £62,000 piece of history
The lot drew little attention when it first appeared in the auction listing, but two sharp-eyed bidders independently recognised the specimen for what it truly was, triggering an intense bidding war that pushed the final price well beyond anyone's initial expectations.
Successful buyer James Cranfield, a passionate taxidermy collector, described the moment as the defining achievement of his collecting life.
"I've sort of peaked in my career. It won't get any better than this," Cranfield said. "And as goofy and as silly as it looks, this is so special. This might be able to unlock something that we previously didn't know about an extinct species."
The thylacine vanished from the earth nearly a century ago. The last known individual died on September 7, 1936, at Hobart Zoo, bringing to a close the existence of a species that had been systematically hunted to oblivion by European settlers who wrongly blamed the animal for killing livestock.
A species scapegoated into extinction
The thylacine's demise is now widely regarded as one of the most avoidable extinctions in modern history. European settlers, unfamiliar with the animal, associated its appearance with predatory wolves from their home countries and assumed it was responsible for sheep deaths on their farms.
Melbourne-based scientist Professor Andrew Pask, who has dedicated 25 years to thylacine research, has explained that the animal was almost certainly not the culprit settlers believed it to be.
"It probably wasn't killing sheep, very rarely. It wasn't its major food source," Pask has said. "Because it looked like the European grey wolf, it looked like predators that had been problematic for farming practices where they came from. The thylacine was, unfortunately, the scapegoat."
Scientists race to bring the thylacine back
The auction result comes at a remarkable moment for thylacine science. Pask leads a team of 40 researchers at the University of Melbourne's TIGRR (Thylacine Integrated Genomic Restoration Research) Lab, which has been working toward the possibility of one day restoring the species.
In 2022, the lab partnered with Dallas-based biotech giant Colossal Biosciences — the same company that made global headlines when it announced it had "de-extincted" the dire wolf using ancient DNA, cloning and gene-editing technology. That announcement came in April of last year, sparking widespread excitement and debate about the future of de-extinction science.
Pask has said the Colossal partnership has been transformative for his team's work. "They have a huge set-up — hundreds of millions of US dollars to actually build these massive genetic engineering facilities and things that we don't have here in Australia," he said. "Being able to partner with them on this project has actually been a massive game changer."
As recently as May 2025, Pask expressed confidence that the thylacine could one day roam Tasmania again, though no firm timeline has been set.
What Cranfield's find could mean for science
If confirmed as the only surviving thylacine head specimen in existence, Cranfield's purchase could carry genuine scientific significance. Preserved biological material from extinct species can provide DNA and other data that directly supports de-extinction research — making the collector's lucky auction find potentially far more valuable than even its final sale price suggests.
For now, Cranfield is simply marvelling at his find — a piece of natural history that almost ended up in someone's collection labelled as a fox.
