Concerns are mounting for a juvenile whale that has been stranded in Western Australia's Peel-Harvey Estuary for more than a week, with fears growing for the animal's wellbeing the longer it remains in the unfamiliar waterway.
The young whale has been unable or unwilling to find its way back out to open ocean, raising alarm among those monitoring the situation. Estuaries present significant challenges for whales, which are ill-suited to the shallow, enclosed waters so far from their natural habitat.
Authorities and wildlife observers are keeping a close watch on the animal as concern deepens over its condition and chances of survival the longer it remains in the estuary.
