Australian explorer Aureka Limited has received a significant boost for its flagship Victorian gold project, with an independent geological assessment identifying an exploration target of between 236,000 and 545,000 ounces of gold at its Irvine project in the state's prolific Stawell corridor. The target sits on top of the project's existing 398,000-ounce inferred JORC resource and is located just 16 kilometres from the world-class, five-million-ounce Stawell gold mine.

What the Geological Review Found at the Irvine Gold Project

The assessment was carried out by Dr Barry Murphy, a highly regarded independent consultant with four decades of experience in geological interpretation. Dr Murphy integrated high-resolution magnetics with induced polarisation data to map the structural architecture of the Irvine project, confirming that several major north-west-trending faults control the local geology. Critically, he identified a series of cross-cutting faults that appear directly linked to known gold mineralisation — a finding that represents a meaningful step forward in the company's targeting capability.

Dr Murphy's credentials carry considerable weight. He previously contributed geological interpretations that led to the discovery of the 5.5-million-ounce Bankan gold project in Guinea while working with Predictive Discovery, making his involvement at Irvine a notable endorsement of the project's potential.

The total exploration target is split into two distinct categories:

  • Advanced targets — based on along-strike extensions from known mineralisation — representing between 1.33 million and 2.66 million tonnes grading 2.0 to 2.3 grams per tonne (g/t) gold, for a potential 85,000 to 197,000 ounces.
  • Conceptual targets — covering extensions to historic mines or areas that have seen limited exploration — potentially containing between 2.35 million and 4.7 million tonnes at comparable grades for an additional 151,000 to 348,000 ounces.

Aureka notes that despite approximately 59 kilometres of drilling at Irvine since the project's discovery in 2017, the geological framework and the definitive controls on mineralisation are still considered to be in their early stages, pointing to what the company believes is a substantial remaining opportunity.

Managing director James Gurry said the work gives the company a credible framework to grow the project. "Barry's work highlights the unexplored potential of this gold-rich geology and at the same time gives us a means by which we can identify credible targets to test with our ongoing drill programs and grow the Irvine gold project to its full potential," he said.

A Two-Pronged Strategy: Irvine Backed by Near-Term Production Plans

While Irvine represents the company's long-term, company-making ambition, Aureka is simultaneously advancing its smaller Comstock gold project — host to a 56,500-ounce resource — within the broader St Arnaud exploration area towards near-term production. The company recently struck visible gold in drilling at Comstock, with assay results still pending, and already has a toll-milling agreement in place with the nearby Wedderburn gold mill.

Aureka's plan is to use early cash flow generated from Comstock to help fund larger-scale exploration at Irvine — a self-funding model designed to reduce reliance on capital markets as the flagship project advances.

Victoria's Gold Sector in Focus

The announcement comes at a favourable moment, with the gold price continuing to strengthen and Victoria's mining industry body pointing to a growing production pipeline stretching through to 2035. The Stawell corridor is attracting increasing interest from explorers, with other companies operating in the region deploying similar geophysical techniques to sharpen their targeting.

Aureka's wider tenement portfolio adds further optionality, encompassing the Jubilee gold project near Ballarat, the Morning Bill gold and base metals project, and critical minerals potential across the St Arnaud area — a historically rich goldfield where records indicate some 400,000 ounces of gold were mined historically at an average grade of 15g/t.

With a refreshed geological model now in hand and a funded pathway to drill testing, Aureka appears well-positioned to systematically test the scale of the Irvine opportunity in the months ahead.
