A massive search and rescue operation is underway after an Indonesian passenger ferry carrying 243 people sank in the Java Sea in rough conditions early Sunday morning. The vessel, named Virgo Transport 8, lost contact with maritime authorities at around 2am local time — 4am AEST — while mid-crossing between two major Indonesian ports.
What We Know About the Indonesian Ferry Sinking
The Virgo Transport 8 was travelling a 500-kilometre route from Surabaya — Indonesia's second-largest city, located in East Java province — to Banjarmasin in South Kalimantan when communications suddenly went silent. It is understood the ferry was approximately 150 kilometres from its destination at the time contact was lost.
A multi-asset rescue response was swiftly launched, deploying helicopters, light aircraft and coastguard vessels to the area. Nearby ships were also redirected to assist in the search. Early reports indicate that around 115 people have so far been rescued from the stricken vessel.
Tragically, six people have been confirmed dead, and authorities fear the final toll could rise significantly as the search continues across open water.
