All 460 people aboard an Indonesian passenger ferry were safely evacuated after the vessel burst into flames as it approached a major Java port on Tuesday afternoon. The KMP Batumandi, carrying 420 passengers and 40 crew members, was nearing the Port of Merak in Banten province when smoke was detected near the stern of the ship, rapidly escalating into a full-scale emergency.

Fire Breaks Out Aboard KMP Batumandi

Footage circulating online showed large flames engulfing the ferry, prompting an immediate emergency evacuation. Rescue teams and nearby fishing boats raced to the scene, successfully bringing all passengers and crew to safety while fire crews worked to contain the blaze.

Passengers were transported to port for assessment following the incident. Eleven people required further medical attention and were taken to a hospital in the nearby city of Cilegon for treatment. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

A Crucial and Busy Maritime Route

The Merak ferry crossing is one of Indonesia's busiest maritime routes, linking the islands of Java and Sumatra and carrying large volumes of passengers and vehicles daily. The incident has again drawn attention to the safety challenges facing Indonesia's extensive ferry network.

Indonesia's Troubled Maritime Safety Record

The KMP Batumandi fire is the latest in a series of serious maritime accidents to strike Indonesia in recent months. Just last month, a passenger ferry sank in the Java Sea while travelling from Surabaya to Banjarmasin, killing 80 of the 243 people on board, with 55 passengers still reported as missing.

In August, a separate ferry caught fire off Madura Island, claiming five lives and leaving 41 passengers unaccounted for. Before that, in July, a passenger ferry sank in the Bali Strait with 65 people on board, resulting in 19 deaths and 17 people still listed as missing.

The repeated incidents have intensified scrutiny of maritime safety standards across the archipelago nation, which relies heavily on ferry services to connect its thousands of islands. Authorities have not yet indicated what regulatory or investigative steps may follow Tuesday's fire aboard the KMP Batumandi.
