An Australian content creator has shared the details of a deeply uncomfortable nine-hour flight after she declined a fellow passenger's request to swap seats — a decision that led to harassment, threats, and an intervention from flight staff that ultimately changed nothing.
Sarah Button was travelling from the United States back to Australia when the incident unfolded. She had pre-selected a back-corner business class seat for the long-haul journey, as she routinely does to guarantee a comfortable trip, and was settling in when she noticed a woman nearby staring at her.
The seat swap request that started it all
The woman, travelling with her husband, approached Ms Button and asked whether she would mind moving so the couple could sit together — having not booked adjoining seats ahead of time. "She said 'Oh you wouldn't mind moving [seats] would you?'" Ms Button later recalled.
Having previously agreed to a similar request on another flight and come away with a bad experience, Ms Button politely but firmly said no. What followed was anything but civil.
"After I said no she sat down next to me and goes 'it's going to be a very long flight for you'," Ms Button told her online followers in a TikTok video that has since been viewed more than 600,000 times.
When Ms Button began messaging her sister about the incident, the woman noticed, leaned around, and repeated the warning: "Yeah, it is going to be a long flight." True to her word, the passenger spent much of the journey leaning across to her husband, pointing at Ms Button and — according to Ms Button's account — photographing her without consent.
Harassment at 35,000 feet
The situation escalated steadily throughout the flight. When Ms Button took photos of herself during the journey, the woman began heckling her. At one point, the passenger reportedly moved to physically block Ms Button from accessing the bathroom.
Ms Button said she asked a flight attendant to step in and get the woman to stop the behaviour, but the intervention made no noticeable difference. Feeling stuck and not wanting to escalate matters further, she said she chose to remain passive rather than confront the woman directly.
"It was just so rough," she said, describing the ordeal as one that lasted the entirety of the near-nine-hour trip.
The online debate: when is it okay to ask to swap seats?
Ms Button's TikTok video ignited a wide-ranging conversation about in-flight seat etiquette, with hundreds of thousands of viewers weighing in on whether such requests are ever appropriate.
Many sided firmly with Ms Button. "Her lack of planning does not make it an emergency for you," one commenter wrote. Another said they operate by a simple rule: "Unless they are offering you a better seat or at least the same seat in a different row. It's always a no from me."
Others took a more nuanced view, arguing the problem was not the request itself but the reaction to being turned down. "I think it's ok if someone asks nicely to swap, it's a yes or no, but when you get a no and you have an attitude oh hell no!!" one user wrote.
Some commenters pointed to circumstances where a swap request might be more reasonable. One person shared that they had once asked to move during a ten-hour flight while three months pregnant and dealing with severe nausea, noting they explained their situation honestly and understood the other passenger's right to decline.
The debate also touched on what counts as a fair swap, with one viewer noting that asking someone to trade an equivalent seat in a different row is simply an inconvenience, while asking someone to downgrade is another matter entirely.
Ms Button summed up her position plainly at the end of her video: "My point is always say no when someone asks to swap seats on a plane because prior planning prevents poor performance."
The incident has prompted many frequent flyers to reconsider their own approach — both to making seat swap requests and to handling a refusal with grace.
