Australian midfielder Mary Fowler has made an immediate impact in the new Women's Super League season, scoring the opening goal as Manchester City defeated newly promoted Birmingham City 3-1 to begin their title defence on the front foot.
The Matildas star broke the deadlock four minutes into the second half, setting the tone for the reigning champions before Jamaican striker Bunny Shaw added two more to seal the result. Birmingham grabbed a late consolation, but City left no doubt about their intent to defend their crown.

After a goalless first half, Fowler came alive on the right wing in the 49th minute. Her initial cross was deflected and came back to her after a failed clearance by Geum-min Lee. "The most important thing was to get the win and start off on the right foot. I think we did that today… we have to keep on going," Shaw said after the match.

Manchester City's win was one of several notable results on the opening weekend of the 2026/27 WSL season.
