Victorian MP Harriet Shing has publicly disclosed that she received an autism diagnosis as an adult, sharing the news during her valedictory speech to parliament.
Shing told fellow parliamentarians that following her diagnosis, "a lot of things started to make sense" — a reflection that drew on her personal experience of receiving the diagnosis later in life.
The disclosure came as part of her farewell address to the Victorian parliament, a traditionally personal occasion on which departing members reflect on their time in public life.
Adult autism diagnoses are increasingly common, with many people only recognising the signs later in life after years of navigating situations without understanding the underlying reasons for their experiences.
